who are we?

"Acting is going in, searching for yourself - everything else is bullshit. (...) Creating a character is not creating exactly, it is looking for yourself and being there. And when an actor gathers the point of being there, it doesn't matter what they are saying.
We [the audience] are so thirsty; it's the best position to be in - you're not directly involved, you can judge, evaluate, understand. But to be an actor - being there and watching yourself - nobody is in a perfect position to understand. Playing a criminal is not about trying to imagine how a criminal would be, it's about how you would commit murder. This was why I was happy to assume the mantle of Flaubert's famous quote about Madame Bovary, «C'est moi». There's also Pirandello's novel One, No One and One Hundred Thousand, about a character who discovers one day that the way he thinks about himself, his secret self, is radically different from the personas that everyone who knows him have constructed for him. This was the question: who are we?"
